Label TextJules Olitski (American, 1922–2007) Flight Scriber Water-based acrylic on canvas, 1990 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Throughout his career, Russian-born Jules Olitski established the primacy of color and surface in works that evolved from subtly stained color field canvases to thick expanses of impasto and finally to riotous compositions of pure, vibrating color. Often associated with the Color Field painters and Post-Painterly Abstraction, Olitski differentiates himself from these schools in his commitment to the tactile and the painterly in the face of impersonal and “cool” abstract painting. In the 1980s, Olitski’s surfaces became increasingly physical and substantial. By smearing paint onto canvas with a gloved hand, as in Flight Scriber, he created thick, sweeping impasto paintings that in many cases bordered on relief.
