Due to their high quality, Steiner’s dolls are often compared with those made by Jumeau. Their bisque heads were made of pressed porcelain, however, even after Jumeau moved to the pouring process, creating thinner doll heads. In 1889, Steiner received a gold metal (Medaille d’Or) at the Paris Exposition for his display of dolls. That year, he also patented several inventions. A new line of doll heads was reinforced by rubber, leather, or fabric as a safety feature, to hold the shards together should the porcelain head break.
