Label TextJules Olitski (American, born Russia, 1922-2007) Embraced: Yellow and Pink Acrylic on canvas, 2005 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III In his late 70s, American abstract painter Jules Olitski came full circle to the vivid colors and curvilinear forms of his 1960s canvases. While his early work covered large expanses of canvas in ethereal, sprayed fields of pure color, Embraced: Yellow and Pink embodies his focus on intense chromatic zones with crackled surfaces and harsh contrasts on a dark ground. During these late years, Olitski worked in a studio on Bear Island in New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee. The surrounding landscape’s rocky shore and verdant forests, amplified by the dramatic sunsets and sunrises on the water, served as inspiration for this painting’s deliberate roughness and juxtaposition of burning bright golds with deep blacks, blues, and swirling pink.
