Norfolk-native artist Maizelle has been an active and beloved fixture in the Hampton Roads arts community for decades. Her vibrant paintings capture historic moments and every-day life in the local African American neighborhoods, distilling her subjects and their activities with an economy of brush strokes and a warm sense of humor.
The Attucks Theatre is a performing arts center (now an architectural landmark) in the heart of Norfolk's Church Street historic district that was designed by African American architect Harvey Johnson in 1919. It was named in honor of Crispus Attuck, a stevedore (dockworker) of African and Native American descent. He became the first American patriot to loose his life in the Boston Massacre of 1770 and therefore was the first casualty of the American Revolution.
