Label TextDale Chihuly (American, born 1941) Float Drawing Acrylic on paper, 1995 Promised gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Drawing has always played a significant role in Chihuly's artistic life as a form of artistic expression that, as he once conceeded, serves him as a creative energy release. Since a car accident, which impeded his three-dimensional vision, drawing is also an imporant means of communication with his team. The Niijima Float, rendered here, became the largest and physically most challenging sculpture form in glass made by Chihuly's studio. Begun in 1991, the series is inspired by the traditional blown-glass fishing floats used by Japanese fishermen to keep their nets adrift. Chihuly visited the last living master of this perishing Japanese craft that year, as well as the volcanic island of Niijima in Tokyo Bay. The sand of its beaches can be melted into workable glass. The resulting series bearing the island's name is characterized by subtle translucency with shimmering iridescence.
