Gilded and Amber Chandelier
Blown, tooled, assembled on painted steel structure, 2002
Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III
Chandeliers are artificially illuminated objects that have brightened and embellished public and private interiors for centuries. This “chandelier,” created by American artist Dale Chihuly, is a glass and steel structure not lit from within. It consists of 260 blown glass elements that are arranged to suit the architectural setting. Originally purchased by Carolyn and Richard Barry in 2008 for their home, it is now reconfigured in a more elongated and looser arrangement to resonate with the rotunda’s height and curves.
Practically a household name, Chihuly has achieved a level of popular success unprecedented for a contemporary glass sculptor. His architectural installations including, this chandelier, illustrate the asymmetry and irregularity that are defining principles of his work.
