Label TextRobert Salmon (American, born British, about 1775–1845) An Armed Brig Shown in Two Positions off Little Cumbrae on the Clyde Oil on canvas, 1814 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Commissioned by her Commander at the time, the subject of the painting is the HMS Martial, a twelve-gun brig. As is typical of Salmon’s ship portraits, the same vessel is shown in at least two positions. The central position is a full profile, while the ship is “hove to” (stopped under full sail), the other shows the ship approaching on the left. Salmon was a distinguished marine artist in England and then Boston, where he moved later in life. The maritime historian Samuel Eliot Morrison (1887-1976) remarked that, “It was here that Salmon achieved his greatest success and recognition.” His Boston Harbor paintings are esteemed for their luminist color and attention to detail.
