Barry, III Cary Smith was descended from the Cary family of Richmond, VA. He was a successful marine painter, yachtsman and naval architect. The New York Yacht Club frequently sponsored races for members where grand schooners participated, with liveried crews and professional captains. The owners generally went along for the ride with guests aboard. Foam, shown here, was typical of the Gilded Era yachts of the day. Montauk lighthouse is visible off to the right, while various other sailing vessels are put in for effect. The NYYC burgee can be seen flying on the foremast while the owner’s signal is flying on the main mast.
