Label TextDale Chihuly (American, born 1941) Cerulean Blue Cylinder with Cobalt Blue Lip Blown glass, 1984 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Chihuly began to develop his Blanket Cylinder Series in 1975, inspired by the geometric, colored patterns on Native American blankets. These new surface designs relied on thinly drawn-out colored glass rods. They were first cut and assembled into woven patches (first by his student Kate Elliott, later by Flora Mace), then picked up on hot cylindrical forms by Chihuly. Three of the early Blanket Cylinders were acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accelerating the young artist’s career.
