Finestre No. 9 (Coda di Pavone) Vase
Blown, glass canes, murine, 2007
Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III
Ohira, educated in Japan, moved to Venice in 1973 to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Exposed to the island of Murano's celebrated glassworks, he has since collaborated with some of the most accomplished and talented Venetian glass masters. His sculptural glass forms combine the restrained design sensibility of his native Japan with the sophisticated patterning imparted by complex arrangements of glass canes formed into vessels by the skilled hands of the island’s best artisans. This lobed vessel allows views through a window (Italian: finestra), cut in the densely colored design of its exterior by Mastro Giacomo Barbini, to reveal patterns resembling peacock feathers.
