Label TextHarvey Littleton (American, born 1922) Green Vase with Wings Blown glass, applied prunts, 1965 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry II Technique is cheap. ~Harvey Littleton, 1963 This experimental vessel is this earliest work of American studio glass in the Barry collection, made by the movement’s founder. Displayed in the first Toledo Glass National Exhibition in 1966, it represented the hard-won quest for free expression in glass. The approach contrasted with more controlled statements pursued by pioneers like Dominick Labino and Joel Philip Myers. The spherical form, natural to the blowing process, prevailed as a formal leitmotif in the 1960s. Littleton, trained as a ceramicist, imparted the undeniable look of abstract expressionist – ceramics on his early work.
