Label TextStanislav Libenský (Czech, 1921–2002; Artist) Yaroslava Brychtová (Czech, born 1924) Head with a Square Eye Mold-melted glass, cut and polished, 1986 (designed), 2001 (made) Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III This stylized sculpture of a human head takes advantage of the optical effects caused by its translucent inner cavities. The Czech glass composition’s rich red color, a particularly complex formula, is modulated by the negative surfaces of the glass relief. Its visual complexity is further emphasized by cutting and polishing, especially by accentuating the natural surface level of the liquid glass that was created during the melting process in the open mold. As with many of their works, Libenský and Brychtová used this mold to cast the sculpture over time in a range of colors, including a pale blue and greyish green.
