Label TextStanislav Libenský (Czech, 1921 – 2002); Jaroslava Brychtova, (Czech, born 1924) Cube in a Sphere Mold-melted, cut, and polished glass, 1979 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III In 1970, husband and wife collaborators Stanislav Libenský and Yaroslava Brychtová entered into their “crystal period” with the creation of small geometrical crystal sculptures that explored the illusionistic qualities of glass. Prism in a Sphere from 1979 represents the peak of this period and is based on experiments, begun in 1976, with reverse perspective in a spherical space. The massive, mold-melted sculpture consists of two half-spheres that are cut to accommodate a rectangular prism in the center. The refraction causes the larger end of the internal prism to flare out like a comet’s tail.
