Label TextBurgun, Schverer & Co (French, 1711–1969, maker) Eugène Kremer (French, 1867–1941, designer) “Echoes of Hellas” Vase Blown amber glass, cased, acid-etched, carved, enameled, gilded, about 1895–1900 Gift of The Leah and Richard Waitzer Foundation. 2022.15 The Echoes of Hellas vase interprets a British book design from the Aesthetic Movement of 1887. George C. W. Warr’s Echoes of Hellas: The Tale of Troy & The Story of Orestes from Homer and Aeschylus… was illustrated by British artist Walter Crane (1845–1915). The roundel on the vase copies Crane’s frontispiece design for the book. It depicts a half-nude Greek Muse, probably Calliope, playing a kithara (small lyre). The French glass company marketed a series of decorative vessels with designs taken from Crane’s book illustrations.
