The Echoes of Hellas vase interprets a British book design from the Aesthetic Movement of 1887. George C. W. Warr’s Echoes of Hellas: The Tale of Troy & The Story of Orestes from Homer and Aeschylus… was illustrated by British artist Walter Crane (1845–1915). The roundel on the vase copies Crane’s frontispiece design for the book. It depicts a half-nude Greek Muse, probably Calliope, playing a kithara (small lyre). The French glass company marketed a series of decorative vessels with designs taken from Crane’s book illustrations.
