Label TextUnknown (French, about 1860-1900) Armchair (Fauteuil en Cabriolet) in the Style of Louis XV Carved and gilded wood; silk upholstery. Gift of Linda H. Kaufman, 2020.15 This well-made armchair is created in the transition style between Louis XV and Louis XVI of the 1770s, when neo-classical influences simplified the design flourishes of the earlier Rococo style. The carved and gilded wood armchair has a medallion-shaped curved back (en cabriolé). Its elegant design emulates those of well-known furniture makers in France, such as Jean-René Nadal and Philippe Poiré, that were also copied and popularized by other European workshops.
