Label TextMontague Dawson, (British, 1895-1973) American Privateer Chasseur, The Pride of Baltimore Oil on board, 1955 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Montague Dawson, unlike the other painters in this collection, was not a contemporary of his subject matter. Specializing in Clipper Ships, Dawson researched their images and used them as models for his work, which was superbly realistic. The Chasseur was one of the most famous and successful of the American privateers during the War of 1812. It was built in Baltimore using new technology of the time: high aspect masts and somewhat over-powered sail plan resulting in high speed. Chasseur was the forerunner of the Clipper Ships that ultimately ruled the seas until steam vessels replaced them at the end of the 19th Century.
