Label TextProbably Great Britain (1860–1900) Wax Valentine Diorama Mixed Media; molded wax, paper; under glass dome with wood base, about 1860–1900 Gift of Linda H. Kaufman, 2020.16 During the Victorian period, wax parlor decorations under protective glass domes were an amateur hobby enjoyed by women with leisure time. Arrangements of wax flowers, fruit, and sentimental figural scenes were particularly popular. The necessary molds and materials could be purchased as kits. This domed glass object including wax figures may have been made for a doll house, or created as a small "valentine," a sentimental ephemeral gift offering on Valentine's Day.
