Influenced by the progressive movement in child education at the turn of the 20th century, these cloth dolls were lightweight and durable. A period label read: “The Chase Stockinet Doll, Made of Stockinet and Cloth, Stuffed with Cotton, Made by Hand, Painted by Hand, Made by Especially Trained Workers.”
Martha Chase, who was married to a doctor, created dolls with a white cotton cloth body and a head without a wig to make them easily cleanable. Some of her special child dolls were used in hospitals to train nurses.
