Merchant Ship Sailing in Full Moonlight
Oil on canvas, about 1890
Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III
Tyler was a prolific and resourceful artist who painted a variety of marine subjects. He studied under Archibald Cary Smith whose picture appears nearby. He painted many of the America’s Cup yachts during his time.He was so popular at the height of his career, that Tyler discovered that forgeries of his works circulated in New York and Chicago.
This picture shows a merchant vessel under full sail at night with moonlight reflected on the water. Somewhat ethereal, you can pick out the running lights, a bright red on the port side and a more muted green to starboard.
