La Plus Jolie Femme de Paris (The most beautiful Woman in Paris)
Etching and drypoint, late 19th century
Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III
The son of a drapery merchant and a milliner in the harbor town of Nantes, Tissot was preconditioned to observe details of dress. He captured the life of society, both in France and in Great Britain, where he moved after the Franco-Prussian War.
The British upper middle class was at its height during the Victorian era, between the industrial revolution and colonialism. In London, he took up engraving and painting portraits, subjects that were characterized by a realistic style and soft colors. This print was executed after the artist’s well-known oil painting from 1883-1885, focusing on the typical Parisienne, the fashionable lady of the day.
