Label TextLino Tagliapietra (Italian, born 1934) Dinosaur 02209 Colorless and multi-colored non-lead glass, blown, tooled, cut (battuto), and polished, 2015 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Italian glass Maestro Lino Tagliapietra’s skill has set a lofty benchmark for American studio glass artists since his first teaching engagement at the Pilchuck Glass School in 1979. The delicate Venetian filigree decoration of swirling and interlocking concentric lines, extended into elongated vessel necks with graceful curves, enhance the artist’s most evocative sculptural vessel forms of his Dinosaur Series. Cold-worked cut surface decorations called battuto (Italian for “beaten,” as in simulating the hammer marks of a metalsmith) accentuate the patterned fields. Tagliapietra named the series after aquatic dinosaurs, which he views as strong but docile and gentle creatures. “Since I live in a place surrounded by lagoons and water, fish and other aquatic creatures are inspirational to me. With this series, I have tried to integrate the strength of the dinosaur with the fluidity of the fishes that inhabit the waters of Venice.”
