Label TextLino Tagliapietra (Italian, born 1934, maker) Effetre International Murano (Italian, retailer) Saturno Blown lead glass, applied (incalmo), tooled, cut, polished, acid-etched, 1998 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III This sculpture is inspired by the planet Saturn and its distinctive ring system, mostly made of chunks of ice and rock. Tagliapietra used the incalmo technique, fusing two glass elements to fashion the flared ring. It is then partially textured with battuto cutting, which has a "hammered" appearance. The series is a collaboration by Tagliapietra with the Venetian firm Effetre Murano S.R.L., which included sculptures, vessels, and lighting devices.
