Rail yards and container hubs are an integral part of Virginia’s commercial heartbeat in the Tidewater region. Colorful graffiti on rail cars form an intricate part of the region’s urban vernacular.
Emily Bartelt-Juel, a locally trained artist, interprets these icons of commerce in glass sculptures as diminutive as model trains, featuring original illustrations by American street artists: Brooklyn-based Leo Tecosky and Minnesotan painter Louis N. LaPierre. Their work is part of a post-graffiti movement that honors traditional graffiti aesthetics—bold colors, graphic shapes, gestural lines—while pushing those practices beyond the street and spray can.
