Dominick Labino was one of the first to successfully combine technological innovation and aesthetics to hot-worked glass in a private studio setting. A scientist/inventor for fifty years in the American glass industry, he received sixty patents improving on glass formulas, furnace design, and devices for glass-forming. In the 1940s, a colleague taught Labino to blow hot glass and he eventually installed a studio at his home in Ohio. His life-long curiosity about historic glass objects contrasted with his friend Littleton’s approach - for Labino, understanding the technology and chemistry of glass was essential to make “glass art.” His Emergence series stands out for their clear transparency and controlled internal veils rendered in pastel colors.
