Label TextJoey Kirkpatrick (American, born 1952) Flora Mace (American, born 1949) Still Life with Three Plums Hand-blown glass fruit in hand-carved alder wood bowl, 2000 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III The oversized glass still life magnifies the ephemeral shapes of fruit into a state of fragile permanency with exaggerated size and color. Their forms and volumes create flowing organic lines that separate positive and negative space with synthesized color and texture. The artists’ unique method of coloring glass evolved from their background as painters, building layers of color by sifting crushed glass powders onto hot glass during the blowing process. While focusing on shape, texture and color of their imagery, questions of symbolism and allusion are kept entirely at bay.
