Label TextDan Dailey (American, b. 1947) Savoir Faire From the “Individuals Series" Blown glass and solid hot worked glass; cut, ground, sandblasted, and acid polished; nickel-plated aluminum base, 2012. Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Art Purchase Fund, 2020.19 Dailey began the Individuals Series in 2004: "My desire to make the "Individuals" stems from a long-held interest in human character traits. Watching the way a person acts—his or her gestures, expressions and demeanor—has provided lasting images..." The qualities of glass, from translucency to the movement of color throughout the hollow volume enhance particular aspects of each portrayal. "Savoir Faire, by the way, translates literally as “expertise.” But the term as I know it isn’t only about expertise. It implies a general attitude of capability and understanding. A person who knows how to get things done and has experience relevant to the task. This could be specific to technical work or cooking or artistic endeavor or business or diplomacy…." (Dan Dailey, June, 2020)
