Barry III Art Purchase Fund, 2019.2 Kämmer & Reinhardt pioneered character dolls in 1909 with a baby doll. It was modeled after a bronze child’s head by German sculptor Arthur Lewin-Funcke. The factory owners purchased it from the artist at an art exposition in Berlin in 1908, together with a boy’s head. That plaster bust became the model for this rare doll’s head in bisque porcelain. The doll adheres closer to the life-like artist portrait than the boy doll with glass eyes modeled by French sculptor Albert Marque, displayed in this gallery.
