Johann Daniel Kestner Jr. founded his company in 1805 with paper maché products, and began making dolls in 1820. The firm soon produced both bisque heads and bodies, and it became a significant competitor to French doll makers. This model from the early 20th-century is a socalled Gibson Girl, typified in illustrator Charles Dana Gibson’s drawings of fashionable women that became the period’s ideal.
