Label TextAristide Marcelling Halopeau, (French, active 1882 -1899) Bébé Mark: “4H,” about 1884 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Aristide Halopeau purchased the Eugène Barrois doll company in 1877, and by 1882 he introduced the “H mold” bébé doll. It was in production until January 1899, when the company went out of business. Halopeau’s doll heads are all pressed, not poured porcelain. After 1890, almost all doll-making companies poured porcelain into molds. The delicately modeled bisque heads, the fine paperweight eyes, and the beautiful craftsmanship of their wood bodies attest to the high quality maintained at Halopeau. However, the company could not compete with the other French firms and, in 1889, the business collapsed. Halopeau dolls are rare survivors of the acclaimed company’s production today.
