Label TextToots Zynsky (American, born 1951) Filet de Verre Bowl Filet de verre fused and heat-formed glass threads, 1986 Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III Originally trained as a painter, Zynsky was less attracted to glass for its color than for its creative possibilities. In her early work, Zynsky plays through tightly wrought contrasts at multiple levels, such as the apparent tensile strength of the color threads and the evocation of open-palmed cupped hands. The vibrancy of her color ultimately has an artificial note, highlighting the contemporary world’s attenuated relationship to nature. Her preferred form has always been the vessel, both as a historical object and as a metaphor, for holding thoughts, fantasies, and dreams.
