Cast sheet glass, cameo-carved, 2014
Gift of Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry III
Australian-educated April Surgent represents a new generation of American artists working in glass, combining a multi-disciplined fine arts background with a keen and committed interest in technological and visual exploration. She perfected her skills after training with Czech master engraver Jiří Harcuba (1928–2013), and her interest became focused on the ancient technique of cameo carving. Mostly working on hand-made flat glass panels cast of two layers of colored, translucent glass in her workshop, she translates her own photographs by carving into the glass panels. Her glass panels are executed in cool colors and often convey snapshots of urban life in a detached, objective manner that recalls the work of American photorealist painters. This triptych was commissioned by the Barrys and depict the wooden boardwalk extending across marshland near their home.
